Three Canadians rose to the top

It lasted hours, but the rewards were great for three outstanding young people. Three divisions of youth participated in the showmanship contest at World Dairy Expo. Starting after the conclusion of the Guernsey and Red & White Heifer Shows, multiple heats narrowed down the pool of over 300 exhibitors representing 25 states and three provinces. Just after 10 p.m. on Thursday, the winners were finally determined.

Growing up on a Guernsey farm in eastern New York, this year’s silver anniversary Duncan MacKenzie recipient, Timothy Coon of Amenia, N.Y., came to his first World Dairy Expo in 1981 and hasn’t missed a show since.

In the early 1980s, this Empire State native left the family farm to pursue a career as a foot trimmer and cattle fitter. He then began working for several sales companies including Hanover Hill Sales and Service, The Cattle Exchange and the Guernsey Marketing Service. Read more

The seventh annual Robert “Whitey” McKown Master Breeder Award is awarded to the Walker family of Walk-Era Holsteins, Wisconsin Dells, Wis. The honor will be presented at the 49th World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wis. This prestigious award recognizes a well-managed breeder herd that has been successful at showing and judging and emphasizes all qualities of the Klussendorf Award, including ability, character, endeavor and sportsmanship. When thinking about a person who is an all around contributor to an industry, the name of Lorne Ella of Rock Ella Jerseys of Hornby, Ontario, Canada, quickly jumps to mind.

This year’s 74th winner of the Klussendorf award was a natural to be heavily involved with cattle, as both of his parents had been brought up that way. With his passionate mother and a wise, deep thinking father, he was well tutored from the moment he could absorb cow knowledge. Read more

Cargill has enlisted street artist Casey Kasparek to create “feed art” in its booth this week at World Dairy Expo.

At its finest, nutrition is a combination of both science and art. Cargill is capitalizing on both as it enlists street artist Casey Kasparek to create “feed art” in its Exhibition Hall booth.

“The science of nutrition is represented through the feeds Kasparek is using, while the art comes through in the designs that he’s laying out,” noted Cargill’s marketing and communications director, Josh Hushon.

Coming back for victory

Featuring deep classes and fancy cows, the International Brown Swiss Show did not disappoint.

The cows paraded in with the traditional fanfare of the New Glarus Yodel Club and the Swiss bells around their necks. As the yodeling came to an end, Judge Paul Trapp of Taylor, Wis., thanked the exhibitors and breeders that made the show possible before selecting his grand champion. Tom Foss, of Cambridge, Minn., assisted him.

Minnesota Chapter wins Central National FFA Dairy Judging Contest

The Central National FFA Dairy Judging Contest was held on Tuesday morning of World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wis. Four classes are judged and the high school students answer questions on one of the classes. This year it was the Brown Swiss 3-year-old class. Oral reasons are not part of this contest. The combined scores determines the winners.

Three young men from the Saint Peter, Minnesota FFA chapter won the contest, besting 126 full teams. Team members included Matthias Annexstad, Nicholas Seitzer and Jacob Pehrson. They topped their closest competition by 33 points. Read more

Musqie Iatola Martha named Jersey Grand Champion

The winning 4-year-old captured top honors at World Dairy Expo’s International Jersey Show.

Quality ran deep in the Jersey show, and Judge Michael Heath and his associate, Wayne Stiles, both of Westminister, Md., were tasked with sorting through the 418 entries that walked on the colored shavings. Heath’s enthusiasm for judging and show cattle rubbed off on the crowd, and the audience gave an enthusiastic round of applause when he named Musqie Iatola Martha-ET as Grand Champion.

The 4-year-old is owned by Shelby Ostrom of Kaukauna, Wis. She was also named Senior Grand Champion. The Reserve Grand Champion was the Intermediate Champion cow, Payneside Mac N Cheese, exhibited by Arethusa Farm LLC, from Litchfield, Conn. She was the winner of the Senior 2-Year-Old class.
