23 State February milk production up 1.7 percent

Released March 19: February 2015 milk production in the 23 states for which USDA reports monthly was 15.1 billion pounds, up 1.7 percent from February 2014. January revised production at 16.5 billion pounds, was up 2.2 percent from January 2014. The January revision represented an increase of 17 million pounds or 0.1 percent from last month's preliminary production estimate.

Minnesota up 4.3 percent; New Mexico down 3.7 percent
New York up 2.3 percent; Ohio up 2.4 percent
Oregon up 0.5 percent; Pennsylvania up 2.0 percent
South Dakota up 9.6 percent; Texas up 4.2 percent
Utah up 6.9 percent; Vermont no change
Virginia no change; Washington up 2.4 percent
Wisconsin up 4.3 percent

Milk production in the 23 major states during February totaled 15.1 billion pounds, up 1.7 percent from February 2014.

Production per cow in the 23 major states averaged 1,757 pounds for February, 8 pounds above February 2014.

The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major states was 8.62 million head. This is 106,000 head more than February 2014 and 2,000 head more than January 2015.

Note: The annual production of milk for the U.S. during 2014 was 206 billion pounds, 2.4 percent above 2013. Revisions to 2013 production increased the annual total 13 million pounds. Revised 2014 production was up 52 million pounds from last month's publication. Production per cow averaged 22,258 pounds for 2014, 442 pounds above 2013. The average number of milk cows in the U.S. during 2014 was 9.26 million head, up 0.4 percent from 2013. The average number of milk cows was revised up 2,000 head for 2014.

Milk production data for 23 states from USDA is released around the 18th of the month following the month for which the information applies. At the same time the current production figures are released, updated data for the previous month's milk production is released. This graph reflects the updated information.

The 23 states for which the USDA reports milk production are: Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.
