23 State September milk production up 4.1 percent

Released October 20: September 2014 milk production in the 23 states for which USDA reports monthly was 15.5 billion pounds, up 4.1 percent from September 2013. August revised production at 16.2 billion pounds, was up 2.6 percent from August 2013. The August revision represented a decrease of 3 million pounds or less than 0.1 percent from last month's preliminary production estimate.

Idaho up 3.4 percent; Illinois down 0.7
Indiana up 4.6 percent; Iowa up 2.8 percent
Kansas up 9.2 percent; Michigan up 6.9 percent
Minnesota up 1.5 percent; New Mexico up 3.4 percent
New York up 4.5 percent; Ohio up 2.4 percent
Oregon up 1.5 percent; Pennsylvania up 3.5 percent
South Dakota up 3.6 percent; Texas up 9.6 percent
Utah up 7.8 percent; Vermont, up 3.9 percent
Virginia up 2.9 percent; Washington up 5.5 percent
Wisconsin up 3.2 percent
Milk production in the United States during September totaled 15.5 billion pounds, up 4.1 percent from September 2013.
Production per cow in the United States averaged 1,804 pounds for September, 56 pounds above September 2013.
The number of milk cows on farms in the United States was 8.59 million head. This is 78,000 head more than September 2013 and 4,000 head more than August 2014.
Note: The annual production of milk for the U.S. during 2013 was 201 billion pounds, 0.3 percent above 2012. Revisions to 2012 production increased the annual total 213 million pounds. Revised 2013 production was up 32 million pounds from last month's publication. Production per cow averaged 21,822 pounds for 2013, 102 pounds above 2012. The average number of milk cows in the U.S. last year was 9.22 million head, down 0.1 percent from 2012. The average number of milk cows was revised down 5,000 head for 2013.
Milk production data for 23 states from USDA is released around the 18th of the month following the month for which the information applies. At the same time the current production figures are released, updated data for the previous month's milk production is released. This graph reflects the updated information.
The 23 states for which the USDA reports milk production are: Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.
