23 State May milk production up 1.4 percent

Monthly Milk Production

Released June 18: May 2015 milk production in the 23 states for which USDA reports monthly was 17.2 billion pounds, up 1.4 percent from May 2014. April revised production at 16.6 billion pounds, was up 1.8 percent from April 2014. The April revision represented an increase of 3 million pounds or 0.1 percent from last month's preliminary production estimate.

Colorado up 2.2 percent; Florida up 2.6 percent
Idaho up 2.4 percent; Illinois up 4.8
Indiana up 2.3 percent; Iowa up 4.4 percent
Kansas up 4.4 percent; Michigan up 7.6 percent
Minnesota up 3.8 percent; New Mexico down 2.3 percent
New York up 2.6 percent; Ohio up 1.3 percent
Oregon down 2.2 percent; Pennsylvania up 3.1 percent
South Dakota up 8.9 percent; Texas down 1.6 percent
Utah up 3.7 percent; Vermont up 1.7 percent
Virginia up 1.3 percent; Washington up 0.7 percent
Wisconsin up 4.4 percent

Production per cow in the 23 major states averaged 1,990 pounds for May, 11 pounds above May 2014.

The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major states was 8.63 million head. This is 72,000 head more than May 2014 and 4,000 head more than April 2015.

Note: The annual production of milk for the U.S. during 2014 was 206 billion pounds, 2.4 percent above 2013. Revisions to 2013 production increased the annual total 13 million pounds. Revised 2014 production was up 52 million pounds from last month's publication. Production per cow averaged 22,258 pounds for 2014, 442 pounds above 2013. The average number of milk cows in the U.S. during 2014 was 9.26 million head, up 0.4 percent from 2013. The average number of milk cows was revised up 2,000 head for 2014.

Milk production data for 23 states from USDA is released around the 18th of the month following the month for which the information applies. At the same time the current production figures are released, updated data for the previous month's milk production is released. This graph reflects the updated information.

The 23 states for which the USDA reports milk production are: Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.
