Marshall Overholt of Big Prairie, Ohio, was the owner of the Junior Champion, Four J Springhill Jerusha-ET, that won the fall heifer calf class. The cows paraded in with the traditional fanfare of the New Glarus Yodel Club and the Swiss bells around the cows’ necks. As the yodeling was completed, judge Eric Topp described the cows pulled out for grand champion of the show as the type of cows that he and associate judge Sherry Smith love to see.

Judge Topp had nothing bad to say about Eloc Wagor Kandid, owned by Ken Main and Peter Vail of Copake, N.Y., which took home the banner for Senior and Grand Champion of the International Brown Swiss Show.

“Well, I don’t know what you would want to change on this cow,” judge Topp said about Kandid. “That rear udder just makes me want to cry.” Read more

Rabobank outlook sees worst effects of global supply and demand imbalance during first half of the year.

Tom Bailey, Rabobank

by Dennis Halladay, Hoard's Dairyman Western Editor

The “wave of milk” now coming from the U.S. is helping flood world dairy product markets, said Rabobank dairy analyst Tom Bailey (pictured above) at an outlook reception for customers in Madison on Monday night. The result, he said, will be significantly lower producer prices in 2015 – a decline that has already hit farmers in Europe and New Zealand.

“U.S. market prices for dairy products are defying gravity and cannot be sustained,” he said. U.S. prices that remain well above world levels have extended the unprecedented Class III prices farmers have enjoyed in 2014. However, the bank’s just-released third quarter outlook report sees a much different picture in 2015. Read more

With his usual gusto, Michael Heath had the music turned up in the ring and headed toward the four cows he had pulled out for Grand Champion of the show. He walked the group once then doubled back to slap the winning aged cow, Hard Core Rebel Rockette, owned by Cor-Bloo Syndicate of Cory, Ind., as Grand Champion of the International Milking Shorthorn Show.

“She just has class,” described Judge Heath. “She has so much breed character about her head and a sweet udder.” Read more

The Hoard’s Dairyman staff works with the National 4-H Dairy Conference’s youth delegates. For many of them, coming from close to 30 states, it’s their first time venturing to Wisconsin, and for some it’s the first opportunity they have had to travel outside their state’s border.

Yesterday, we had the chance to hear firsthand about the delegates' experiences and why other 4-H youth should consider attending the program.
