Foreshadowing the demise of Waterloo, Expo visionary Alan Hetts took a leap of faith in Madison, Wis. We Need A Show chronicles that story and how Expo has developed over the past 50 years.

With its golden anniversary in 2016, Expo’s celebrations have already begun. Two longtime Hoard’s Dairyman editors, Steve Larson and Corey Geiger, played a special role in bringing to life 50 years of World Dairy Expo history through We Need a Show.

The pair co-edited, We Need a Show, the commemorative 50th anniversary book that brought together 40 independent writers and influential Expo personalities to document the memories and stories of the show. Read more

National Dairy Shrine honors its leaders, past, present and future!

Annual banquet is a night to celebrate

The National Dairy Shrine banquet will be held on Thursday, October 1, during World Dairy Expo. The organization will honor its pioneers, a distinguished dairy cattle breeder, and guest of honor. Many students will also be in attendance as over $60,000 in scholarships will be presented at the banquet, making National Dairy Shrine the leading scholarship provider in the dairy industry.

This year, it’s about Time

Judge Paulson selected his champion from the 225 Milking Shorthorns that were exhibited this year.

Milking Shorthorn championWith no shortage of excitement, Judge Allyn Paulson, Arlington, Wis., chose the Grand Champion of the International Milking Shorthorn Show. As both feet left the ground, he brought his hand down upon the rump of Cates Ruben Tulsa-Time-EXP. Time was bred and owned by Peter Cate of Warren, N.H.

The cow from the Granite State stood at the top of the 4-year-old cow class, and was also chosen by Paulson to receive best udder honors. It’s been a decade and a half since an animal Cate owned stood victorious on the colored shavings. Read more

Wisconsin cows and kids top the Junior Holstein Show

A pair of cows from the Badger State was named Grand and Reserve Grand Champion at the International Junior Holstein Show.

Holstein cows owned and exhibited by junior members paraded across the royal blue shavings on Tuesday afternoon. Judge Chad Ryan of Fond du Lac, Wis., and his associate Jamie Black of Constable, N.Y., placed 229 animals in the International Junior Holstein Show at World Dairy Expo.

The winner of the day was Blondin Goldwyn Subliminal-ETS, an aged cow owned by Trevor Tuman and Chandler Bening of Lomira, Wis. The Reserve Grand Champion was Kingsmill Atwood Allison-ET, a 4-year-old owned by Jordan and Whitney Ebert of Algoma, Wis. Read more

Mary Creek, Hagerstown, Md., had her work cut out for her as she placed North America’s elite Ayrshires on World Dairy Expo’s colored shavings Tuesday. One 3-year-old cow from New York clearly caught her eye.

Cedarcut Burdette Clove Colata, owned by Erin Curtiz-Szalach of Cazenovia, N.Y., sorted her way to the top of the Senior 3-Year-Old Cow class and was awarded bred and owned, best udder, and production at the show. Colata also took home Intermediate Champion Female and Grand Champion Female honors. Much like the Guernsey, Pistachio Pie a few years before, the cow was also named Grand Champion of the Junior Show. Read more

What’s the best way for trade show exhibitors to relax after the first day in the booth? Food, drinks and visiting with fellow show exhibitors at the Hoard’s Dairyman and World Dairy Expo-sponsored Exhibitor Party. The attendees were able to mill around catching up with old friends and making new ones. The festivities filled the room and overflowed into the lobby.
