Over 100 Guernsey 2-year-olds now classified

A number of young Guernsey bulls, without official proofs, have daughters classified at the Hoard’s Dairyman Farm. Average age at first calving is 23.5 months.

The Hoard Farm team headed up by Jason Yurs continues to be pleased with the performance of young sires’ daughters. On December 13, a number of young bulls had daughters either scored for the first time . . . or very early in the evaluation process.

Ripley Farms Aaron Cordell, a young bull with 11 daughters in his production proof, has four appraised at the Hoard’s Dairyman Farm: 85, 81, 77 and 76, respectively. Cordell’s daughters ranged from 86 to 77 on feet and legs scores, from 86 to 76 in the udder. Read more

University of Kentucky student had hands-on learning on dairy operation.

Makenzie Waymeyer completed her 3-month farm internship in early August. She is a senior at the University of Kentucky majoring in career and technical education, which is the educational path to teaching high school agriculture and serving as an FFA advisor.

Picture-day planning starts far in advance.

The Hoard’s Dairyman Farm typically pictures cows at the farm once each year for promotion, marketing and advertising purposes. This generally occurs in summer or fall. This year, a beautiful summer day was the backdrop for 10 cows.

But, before picturing can start, there was a lot of work that went into planning the day’s events. The first item the farm team needed to decide on was which cows would be pictured – those for A.I. companies and for the farm itself. Hoard’s Dairyman Farm uses many young sires and they are frequently photographed as progeny-test daughters to be used by A.I. companies in their marketing projects.

Hoard’s Dairyman Farm wins National Guernsey Awards

Balance of production and type earn recognitions.

The American Guernsey Association presented awards at their National Guernsey Convention Awards breakfast. Hoard’s Dairyman Farm Manager, Jason Yurs attended the convention in Oklahoma as the farm garnered several honors.

Nyala-Bedford Trophy as Jason Yurs displays the Commercial Herd plaque.

The High TPE Lactation Average for Protein and High TPE Lactation Average for Fat were both won by Hoard’s. The 140 Guernsey records averaged 22,624 M 4.7% 1,067 F 3.4% 770 P. On a cheese yield basis, that equates to 2,610 pounds of cheese per cow. Read more

University of Kentucky student to spend three months in Fort Atkinson.

While the Hoard’s Dairyman editorial internship program is celebrating its 25th year in 2013, there is another internship we offer. Just down the road one mile, you will find Makenzie Waymeyer, the fourth Hoard’s Dairyman Farm intern.

Last fall, she visited the Hoard’s Dairyman Farm when she participated in the collegiate dairy judging practice prior to World Dairy Expo. Makenzie inquired about an internship and spoke with Jason Yurs, the farm manager. She submitted a resume and cover letter once she returned to Kentucky. While the farm does not always have an intern each year, the program is available to enthusiastic college students interested in working on a modern dairy operation. Read more

American Guernsey Association appraiser, Brian Schnebly evaluated the Hoard’s Dairyman Guernsey herd on September 27 and 28. His visit was just days before hundreds of visitors will tour the farm while at World Dairy Expo.

A highlight was a cow that was raised to EX-94 with an excellent udder. Her name is Rolling Prairie Bella Blue and made over 30,000 pounds of milk and 1246 pounds of fat last lactation. She is sired by Rolling Prairie Maxie Pistol. She has one daughter in the herd.

New excellents

Jan made over 28,000 pounds of milk and 1300 pounds of fat last lactation. She is sired by Idle Gold E Challenge-ET. She is backed by two EX-91 dams with top production. Read more

2011 Component Queens

The 2011 Guernsey Component Queens were compiled from all 305-day DHI and DHIR lactation records received and made official by the American Guernsey Association. To be considered official for production recognition programs and awards, the cow must have had at least 8 test days with components measured for a 305D record and 9 test days with components measured for a 365D record.
