Two webinars scheduled to provide information about the Farm Bill, Crop Insurance, and Renting Farm Land

The University of Wisconsin-Extension and UW Center for Dairy Profitability are hosting two webinars in March to provide information about the new Farm Bill with a focus on the Crop Insurance features; a second webinar will focus on ag land values and renting farm land.

“The outlook for commodities has changed dramatically in the past year,” said Arlin Brannstrom, UW Center for Dairy Profitability. “Land rental rates have been rising leaving some producers looking for ways to hedge their bets on land.”

The “Ag Land Values and Renting Farm Land” webinar will be held on Thursday, March 6 from 1-2:30 p.m. The webinar will address input costs, flexible rent options and importance of written contracts.

The webinar can be joined from your web browser at http://wisc.adobeconnect.com/lease2014. Webinar audio will be available over the VOIP connection only. Be sure to have your speakers connected and unmuted. There is no cost to join the webinar.

The agenda for the meeting is as follows:

  • 1 p.m.: Introduction to Land Values and Leases typical around the region – Arlin Brannstrom, UW Center for Dairy Profitability. Discussion will include a breakdown of how land prices are changing around the state and what might be changing land rental demand going forward.
  • 1:20 p.m.: Corn and Bean Economics 2012 ‐ Review of Enterprise Budgets 2013 ‐ Ted Bay, UW-Extension crops/farm management agent. This segment will include factors to consider when renting land to grow corn and beans on in the coming year.
  • 1:40 p.m.: Lease Contracts and Legal Concerns – Phil Harris, UW-Extension/Madison farm law specialist. Many rental agreements are on a handshake. Phil will cover the legal issues involved with renting farm assets and what makes for a legal contract.
