Denmark, WI. The National Dairy Shrine is pleased to announce the winners of their dairy scholarships for 2016. National Dairy Shrine will provide more than $45,000 of scholarships to students at their annual awards banquet on Thursday, October 6th in Madison, Wisconsin. This announcement highlights the scholarship winners so their friends and family can plan ahead to attend the NDS awards Banquet. More detailed news releases on scholarship recipients will be published this summer as photos become available.
Kildee Scholarships
Receiving a Kildee Graduate Studies $3,000 Scholarship is Bethany Dado of Amery, Wisconsin. Bethany attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has plans to get a Masters Degree in Lactation Physiology from the University of Florida and pursue her passion to earn a PHD and become a university professor.
Also receiving a Kildee Graduate $3,000 Scholarship is Mary Liebenstein of Dundas, Minnesota. She received an Animal Science degree from the University of Minnesota. Ms Liebenstein will be entering the College of Veterinary Medicine at Minnesota with a goal of becoming a veterinarian specializing in consulting with dairy producers.
Emily Shaw of Williamsburg, Pennsylvania, has been selected as this year's recipient of the Kildee Undergraduate Studies Scholarship. She is currently attending Penn State University, majoring in Agribusiness Management with a specialization in Dairy Science.
Senior Student Recognition Scholarships
The NDS student recognition program recognizes graduating seniors planning a career related to the dairy industry who have demonstrated outstanding leadership skills, academic ability, and a sincere interest in dairy cattle. Each university is allowed to nominate up to two candidates for this recognition in any given year. The highest winner receives a $2000 award, the second a $1500 award and the other winners receive $1000 awards.
The top award winner is Mary Leibenstein from Dundas, Minnesota. Mary has been involved in dairy judging and has had leadership roles on campus included serving as President of the Gopher Dairy Club. She has decided to attend Veterinary Graduate School with a goal of becoming a consulting veterinarian. The second award goes to Bethany Dado of Amery, Wisconsin. She is a Dairy Science and Genetics graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has been very active in dairy cattle judging and has held leadership roles in the Association of Women in Agriculture. She will be attending the University of Florida on a Masters program.
Next is Cody Getschel from Osceola, Wisconsin, who has pursued a Dairy Science major at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Next is Elizabeth Davis of Union Bridge, Maryland, who was a major in Dairy Science at Virginia Tech. Following next is Kara Maxwell of Donahue, Iowa, who majored in Dairy Science & International Agriculture at Iowa State University. Next is Caitlyn Pool, of Robesonia, Pennsylvania, who was an Animal Science major at Penn State University. The final senior recognition honoree is Taylor Kruse from Wauseon, Ohio, who was a major in Animal Science - Industries & Dairy Certificate from the Ohio State University.
NDS / DMI Milk Marketing & Dairy Products Scholarships
Sydney Endres, of Lodi, Wisconsin has been awarded the NDS / DMI Milk & Dairy Products top scholarship of $1500. Sydney is a Dairy Science & Life Sciences Communication major at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Additionally, four other undergraduate students have been awarded $1000 scholarships. These generous scholarships are made possible by Dairy Management Inc. and NDS to encourage students to pursue careers in dairy product or milk marketing, dairy product development and/or quality control or similar roles in the dairy & food industries.
Gabriella Sorg is an Animal Science and Agriculture & Food Business major at the University of Minnesota. Anna Culbertson of Pine Island, Minnesota is an Agricultural Communications and Marketing major at the University of Minnesota. Ethan Dado, of Amery, Wisconsin is an Agricultural Education and Animal Science major at the University of Minnesota. John Johnson of Moscow, Idaho is a Food Science major at Washington State University.
NDS/DMI Education & Communication Scholarships
Audrey Schmitz, of Axtell, Kansas has been awarded the NDS / DMI Education & Communication top scholarship of $1500. Audrey is an Agricultural Communications & Journalism and Animal Science major at Kansas State University. Additionally, four other undergraduate students have been awarded $1000 scholarships. These generous scholarships are made possible by Dairy Management Inc. and NDS to encourage students to pursue education or communication careers in the dairy product industry or related food industries. Major areas include Marketing, Education, Food Science, Nutrition (Human), Public Relations, Promotion, Social Media and Communications.
Jennifer Haler is an Animal Science and Spanish & Portuguese Studies major at the University of Minnesota. Crystal Siemers Peterman of Cleveland, Wisconsin, is attending the University of Minnesota and majoring in Agricultural and Food Business Management. Jacob Johnson of Heron Lake, Minnesota, is majoring in Agricultural Education and Dairy Production at South Dakota State University. Jill Seiler of Valley Center, Kansas, is a Agricultural Communication & Journalism and Animal Science major at Kansas State University.
Junior Merit Scholarships
The National Dairy Shrine Junior Merit Scholarship is to encourage qualified undergraduate students to pursue careers in the dairy industry or related occupations. Amber Gable, of Newport, Pennsylvania has been awarded the top scholarship of $1500. Amber is an Animal Science major at Penn State University. Additionally, three other undergraduate students have been awarded $1000 scholarships.
Elizabeth Endres of Waunakee, Wisconsin, is attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison and majoring in Dairy Science. Johanna Knorr of Pelican Rapids, Minnesota is majoring in Animal Science and Agricultural & Food Business Management at the University of Minnesota. Trevor Otte of Randolph, Minnesota, is an Animal Science (Pre-Vet) major at the University of Minnesota.
Sophomore Merit Scholarships
The National Dairy Shrine Sophomore Merit Scholarship is to encourage qualified undergraduate students to pursue careers in the dairy industry or related occupations. Laura Jensen of Comstock, Wisconsin has been awarded the top scholarship of $1500. Laura is majoring in Animal Science with a Dairy Production Emphasis at the University of Minnesota. Additionally, four other undergraduate students have been awarded $1000 scholarships.
Marina Sweet of London, Ohio, attends the Ohio State University and majors in Animal Science – Biosciences. Jordan Siemers of Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin is majoring in Animal Science with a concentration in Dairy Management at Cornell University. Ethan Haywood of Hastings, Michigan is majoring in Animal Science at Michigan State University. Charles Hamilton of Cuba City, Wisconsin, is majoring in Dairy Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Maurice Core Scholarships
These $1000 scholarships are given in honor of Maurice Core, the long-time Executive Secretary of the American Jersey Cattle Association, and former Executive Director of the National Dairy Shrine. The funds for this award were donated by the friends of Maurice Core. The Core Scholarships are given to freshman status students working toward a degree in dairy/animal science or related majors.
Receiving Maurice Core Scholarships are Trent Dado of Amery, Wisconsin, who is a student at the University of Minnesota. Next is Sabrina Portner from Sleepy Eye, Minnesota, who is attending Iowa State University. Next is Haely Leiding of Fountain, Minnesota, who is attending the University of Minnesota. The final recipient is Jared Sanderson from Sandusky, Michigan, who is attending Michigan State University. All of these college freshmen have been excellent students and already very active in campus activities.
Iager Scholarship
The Iager Scholarship for $1000 is awarded annually to students in a two year agricultural school pursuing a career in the dairy industry. It is based on academic standing, leadership ability, interest in the dairy industry and plans for the future. This scholarship was started with a generous donation from the Charles and Judy Iager family of Fulton, Maryland.
The recipient this year is; Lindsey Rettenmund of Black Earth, Wisconsin, who is attending University of Wisconsin – Farm & Industry Short Course and majoring in Dairy Farm Management, Farm Service & Supply, and Soil & Crop Nutrient Management.
