Dr. Bruce Wren Award to be presented to beef and dairy practitioner at 2014 American Association of Bovine Practitioners Annual Conference
Steve Schram, AgriLabs President and Chief Executive Officer, will present the recipients of the AgriLabs Dr. Bruce Wren Continuing Education Awards at the 2014 47th American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP) Annual conference in Albuquerque, N.M., Sept. 18-20.These annual awards honor Bruce Wren, DVM, PhD, a long-time AgriLabs technical services veterinarian, in recognition of his lifelong commitment to practical and formal continuing education for veterinarians. A $5,000 continuing education grant is given to one dairy veterinarian and one beef veterinarian who are involved in a veterinary practice and have graduated veterinary school within the last 10 years. Each grant makes possible professional continuing education proposed by the applicant.
The 2014 recipients are Dr. L. Henderson King, Ennis, Texas, (beef winner), and Dr. Mary Mowrer, Maria Stein, Ohio (dairy winner).
"AgriLabs believes these awards will facilitate Dr. Wren's efforts to encourage veterinarians to identify and participate in professional development opportunities to better them as a professional and practitioner," remarked Schram.
Dr. King works with rodeo stock and cow-calf producers at a three-veterinarian practice. His goal is to attend an embryo transfer course which will enhance his skills in artificial insemination, embryo transfer, and semen cryopreservation. Clients of King's understand the importance of these tools to improve the genetic potential in their herds.
Working beside six other veterinarians, Dr. Mowrer serves approximately 30,000 head of dairy cattle in the nearby 65 dairy operations. Mowrer's continued education plans are to visit dairies in the Queretaro, Mexico area. There, she hopes to gain experience in the Spanish-speaking labor force to assist in writing and implementing protocols to treat dairy cattle.
"It's an honor to assist both Dr. King and Dr. Mowrer in their continued educational goals that will help them better serve their clients and the industry," said Schram.
Aside from being a young practitioner, applicants must specifically outline the type of continuing education they are seeking, its approximate costs, and the benefits it will provide to the applicant, his/her practice and the practice's clients.
