Dairy's Diverse Workforce is Focus of PDPW Multi-Cultural Management Workshop, December 10-11

PDPW logoProfessional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin (PDPW) will offer a two day interactive workshop, "Multi-Cultural Management," on Wednesday, December 10 through Thursday, December 11 at the Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells, Wis. Farm owners and supervisors who currently have or who are seeking a culturally diverse workforce are encouraged to attend.

Today's dairy farms have employees from Mexico, Central America and other Latin American countries seeking employment. With this unique group of employees, special care must be taken to recognize, understand and appreciate the culture of others. This workshop will teach strategies for building and maintaining an effective, motivated employee group where cultural differences are accepted and every worker knows he/she is a valued member of the team.

Workshop presenters are Dr. Noa Roman-Muniz, Extension Dairy Specialist with the Department of Animal Science at Colorado State University, and Tom Wall, a "dairy coach" who trains employees and helps dairy managers implement simple systems that work. Wall owns Language Links, LLC and is the creator of Dairy Interactive Milker Software. While both workshop presenters speak fluent Spanish and English, this conference will be taught in English.

Day One presentations will include:

  • "Creating a Foundation for Building Your Team." This session will focus on knowing and understanding the people side of the dairy business, understanding employees and the role of the manager.

  • "Employee Management Simplified" will offer five basic principles that help make for better management and result in consistent performance from a team. Presenters will focus on the skills necessary to empower people from different cultures to deliver results.

  • The day will conclude with dinner and an open forum among farm owners and managers to share questions and success stories that can be applied to other farms.

Day Two will focus on execution of the principles discussed the previous day. In "Executing is Everything," managers and supervisors will learn how to implement practical employee management systems and strategies that keep teams feeling confident, happy and functioning at an optimal level.

A brochure for the Multi-Cultural Management Workshop is available at www.pdpw.org or by calling PDPW at 800-947-7379. Those interested in attending may register online or by phone. The workshop hotel, Chula Vista Resort, 2501 River Road Wisconsin Dells, Wis., will offer a special room rate for this conference. To obtain this rate, reserve a room by Wednesday, Nov. 19.
