About the Milk-to-Cheese Initiative - #Milk2Cheese:
During the week-long 2015 All-American Dairy Show, held at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center in September, more than 2,000 of the best dairy cattle in North America produced 97,327 pounds (the equivalent of 11,317 gallons) of fresh milk. The PA Dairymen's Association sent the milk to Penn Cheese in Winfield, PA to be converted into 8,300 pounds, or more than four tons, of mild, creamy white Farmers Cheese. The cheese then was shipped to a specialty plant, The Deli Source in Antioch, Illinois, for slicing.
Now, a truck carrying 170,000 slices of Farmers Cheese is on its way to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank – just in time for Thanksgiving. The Dairymen's Association will provide the cheese to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank at a much-reduced cost.

"We are proud to enhance our ongoing commitment to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and help bring much-needed, nutritious dairy products to the families they serve in our communities," said Dave Smith, executive director of the Pennsylvania Dairymen's Association.

"It is a testament to the generosity of dairy farmers in Pennsylvania who want to serve their neighbors, especially during this season of thankfulness and giving. We are proud to partner with the Dairymen to bring fresh cheese to the homes of the hungry," noted Joe Arthur, executive director, Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, in anticipation of the delivery.

"The All-American Dairy Show is proud to participate in the Milk-to-Cheese program facilitated by the PA Dairymen's Association with the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank," said Alan McCauley, D.V.M., president of the Board of Directors of AADS. "Exhibitors from 20 states and eastern Canada are pleased that their milk is being incorporated into such a worthy cause. Thanks to all who helped make this program a successful reality."

About the Partnership of PA Dairymen and Central Pennsylvania Food Bank:
This cheese initiative furthers the Dairymen's commitment to provide the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank with wholesome dairy products - rich in protein - to stem hunger and help families in need. Research shows that 1 in 5 children is at risk for going to bed hungry, and 1 in 7 people faces hunger in Central Pennsylvania.

The Dairymen's Association and Central Pennsylvania Food Bank have raised nearly $175,000 in their joint #FillAGlassWithHope campaign to provide fresh milk to the hungry. That fresh milk campaign, begun last January at the 2015 PA Farm Show, so far has provided more than 850,000 servings of milk to clients of the Food Bank in 27 counties.

About PA Dairymen's Association:
PA Dairymen's Association was originally formed as the Crawford County Dairy Association in 1871. Within 17 years, the county group had become a statewide organization with a focus on supporting Pennsylvania dairy farms. In 1954, the Association joined together with the Valley Grange #1360 from Lewisberry, Pa. to serve hand-dipped milkshakes at the PA. Farm Show. More than 60 years later, the Association now serves on average 160,000 vanilla, chocolate and mixed milkshakes each year. Proceeds benefit agricultural scholarships, youth initiatives and educational programs across the state.
