Details on MPP to be explained to help decision-making process for producers



The Mount Joy Farmers Cooperative, along with the Center for Dairy Excellence, Dairy Marketing Services and Dairy Farmers of America invite producers to attend one of two educational sessions on the new Dairy Margin Protection Program (MPP).

The MPP details were released in late August under the 2014 Farm Bill and will replace existing safety nets such as the MILC program. Enrollment for this program is open until November 28, 2014 and will provide coverage for September 2014-December 2015. In order to enroll, dairy farmers need to visit their local FSA office. Attending one of these meetings will provide producers with the important information needed before going to the FSA office.

The meetings are scheduled as follows:

Friday, October 24 at Intercourse Fire Hall located at 10 N. Hollander Rd., Intercourse, PA 17534, from 10:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m., with lunch at 12:00 p.m. Penn State Cooperative Extension and National Penn Bank will partner with the center and Mount Joy on this meeting.

Tuesday, November 4 at The Gathering Place located at 6 Pine St., Mt. Joy, PA 17552 from 8:00 a.m. - 10:45 a.m., with breakfast at 8 a.m. Penn State Cooperative Extension and PNC Bank will partner with the center and Mount Joy on this meeting.

Staff from the Center for Dairy Excellence and Penn State Cooperative Extension will be on hand to discuss options for using the Dairy MPP program. Mount Joy Farmers Cooperative will also have the information available for to select the base production year appropriate and will demonstrate the tools that can be used to determine what margin level is appropriate.

Advanced registration is requested by Friday, October 17, for the meeting at the Intercourse Fire hall and by Tuesday, October 28, for the meeting at The Gathering Place.
