Salem Woman is South Dakota's 60th Dairy Princess



Elizabeth Mayrose of Salem was crowned the South Dakota's 60th Dairy Princess tonight (Tues., March 24) in Sioux Falls during the kickoff for the Central Plains Dairy Expo.

Elizabeth Mayrose pictureThe new princess is the 20-year-old daughter of Pattie Mayrose and Jerry Mayrose. She is a junior at South Dakota State University majoring in agricultural leadership with a minor in agricultural law and speech communications. Raised on a dairy with her six brothers and sisters, Mayrose was a two-time national FFA proficiency award finalist. She recently interned with the South Dakota Department of Agriculture as a legal and policy intern in the secretary's office.

Mayrose receives a $1,000 scholarship from Midwest Dairy Association's South Dakota Division, which sponsors the princess program. She will represent South Dakota dairy farmers at appearances aimed at helping consumers understand milk's path from the farm to the table and the stewardship which guides dairy farm practices.

Katie Merrill, 19, Parker, was named runner-up. Her parents are Allen and Kristi Merrill, and she attends Presentation College in Aberdeen with a major in nursing and minor in nutrition. She was awarded a $500 scholarship from the Central Plains Dairy Expo.

Each of the four candidates for the title received a $250 scholarship from Midwest Dairy Association.

The South Dakota Dairy Princess is selected based on her general dairy knowledge and enthusiasm for the industry, communications skills and ability to reach consumer audiences.
