A short notice workshop for farm advisers, and Southeast dairy stakeholders, and producers will take place in Atlanta this Wednesday, Sept. 10. The nation's leading dairy economists will be on hand to explain the details of the new Margin Protection Program created in the 2014 Farm Bill, as well as provide a hands-on workshop to get familiar with the program and how it affects various herd sizes. The workshop is titles "Training the Trainer." Presenters include Andy Novakovic, Cornell; Mark Stephenson and Brian Gould, UW Madison, Chuck Nicholson, Penn State, Cameron Thraen, Ohio State, John Newton, University of Illinois, Christopher Wolf, Michigan State University, and Marin Bozic, University of Minnesota.
This is one of five meetings taking place this week across the country. This new dairy safety net will affect dairy farm communities across the country, and understanding the program is very important to rural economies dependent on dairy farming as a vital economic contributor.
Producer sign-up period is from September 2nd until November 28th. There are still many questions about the workings of this new program; this event will feature a hands-on workshop to work through various scenarios.
