2015 AABP Annual Conference aims to equip cattle veterinarians with new skills and ideas.
The 2015 48th American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP) Annual Conference Sept. 17-19 in New Orleans, La., is taking continuing education and in-depth training to a new level with this year's program. Registration is now open.
The 2015 program theme, "Embrace Change. Expand Skills. Explore Opportunities." is intended to assist attendees to navigate the numerous changes in bovine medicine including regulations, welfare and protocols, and adopt new skills to benefit their practices and their beef and dairy producer clients.
"The general sessions will focus on cattle welfare topics for beef and dairy farms, and keynote speaker Dave Daley will present current thoughts on animal welfare and the changing social ethic," says AABP President-Elect and Program Chairman Dr. Fred Gingrich. "Attendees will also have the opportunity to learn from veterinarians and producers who have experienced undercover videos released from their farms." The beef and dairy sessions will offer practitioners current topics tackled every day from fetal programming to BRD and sand lanes to Salmonella, Gingrich adds.
Ten limited enrollment Clinical Forums will be hosted by experts in an informal environment to allow for one-on-one interaction for maximum benefit.
For those seeking in-depth training, the AABP Preconference Seminar schedule is filled with 17 courses to provide members with a variety of opportunities to focus their continued education in a specific area. "In addition to the long-standing seminars in the areas of beef and dairy nutrition, embryo transfer and transition cow management, we have an exciting line up of new seminars," says Preconference Seminar coordinator and AABP Vice President Dr. Mark Thomas.
"In addition to milk quality, communications skills, nutrition and more, new offerings include dairy cow lameness, proper drug use and dairy personnel performance," Thomas adds. "These courses provide the tools to take home skills that can be implemented the day you return home."
Students will play a large part in the conference with student sessions, the 6th annual Quiz Bowl, student case competition and scholarship awards. Large animal veterinary technicians and veterinary assistants also have dedicated sessions.
In addition to the CE, the AABP conference offers entertainment, awards for members, over 100 exhibitors in the trade show, honoring of the 2015 Cattle Production Veterinarian Hall of Fame inductees, the 8th annual Job Fair, the Amstutz Live and Silent auctions, and the third 5K Stampede Fun Run through Audubon Park in New Orleans.
