DeLaval Unveils State-of-the-art Teat Dip Technology

GlyTec™ Sets New Standard for Unrivaled Teat Conditioning and Hygiene

GlyTecDeLaval launched today the latest innovation in udder hygiene solutions. Providing superior teat conditioning, while equaling the bacteria control of industry-accepted standards, GlyTec™ is a patent pending technology that is formulated for pre-, post- and barrier applications. The revolutionary active ingredient is based on glycolic acid, a natural constituent of milk. Glycolic acid is also used in the cosmetic industry to improve human skin conditioning.

DeLaval is the only company to offer GlyTec technology in teat dips and is premiering it at the American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP) conference in New Orleans September 17 – 19 at booth 515. Commercial release of OceanBlu™, the product utilizing this technology, will take place at World Dairy Expo in Madison, WI, September 29 – Oct 3 at booths 3011 - 3315.

En-vitro efficacy shows greater than 5-log kill in 15 seconds for all major mastitis-causing bacteria. The Glycolic acid in GlyTec disrupts the bacteria's cell membrane then penetrates into the cell and denatures its proteins. During application, the teats are hydrated using carefully selected skin conditioners. The pre-post formula is composed of 5% glycerin and the barrier formulation has a 10% blend of glycerin and sorbitol. Both formulations contain 3% glycolic acid.

"GlyTec technology delivers powerful control of mastitis based on our exclusive natural ingredients," says Steve Kraft, DeLaval Inc. Product Specialist for Milk Quality and Animal Health, "It gives producers a new platform with vigorous bacteria control and teat conditioning in one package. In clinical trials, some conducted in bitter winter temperatures, the formula outperformed our greatest expectations."

The strong blue color of the GlyTec product is easy to identify, adding an additional level of quality control for producers. The barrier dip dries to a film that reactivates when wet to continue disinfecting the teat between milkings. It is ready-to-use, requiring no mixing before application which saves time.

In clinical trials, cows treated with a pre-post teat dip containing GlyTec had a lower incidence of intramammary infection. Field study results showed improved teat conditioning when compared to chlorine dioxide dips.
