Cheese Stand at World Dairy Expo Sells Record Number of Sandwiches

The student-run Cheese Stand at World Dairy Expo sold a record number of grilled cheese sandwiches this year. More than 28,080 sandwiches were sold in six days at the grounds, surpassing the previous record by over 600 sandwiches.

Collegiate Farm Bureau at UW-Madison and the Badger Dairy Club organized and managed the Cheese Stand as the student organizations' main fundraisers for the year. The Cheese Stand was guided by two World Dairy Expo Cheese Stand Interns, Cody Getschel a senior at UW-Madison studying Dairy Science and Sydney Endres, a junior majoring in Dairy Science and Life Sciences Communication.

Endres worked with the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board (WMMB) to try a new promotion. On Tuesday through Saturday of this year's World Dairy Expo there was a new featured cheese sandwich in the stand. WMMB and AMPI continue to provide the cheese for the stand so in addition to the traditional Swiss and American sandwiches the clubs also served Provolone on Tuesday, Tomato Basil Cheddar on Wednesday, Gouda on Thursday, Dill Havarti on Friday, and Pepper Jack on Saturday. The additional one hundred pounds of specialty cheese sold out each day! "I loved working with WMMB to come up with this new promotional idea and we were thrilled with its success," Endres stated.

"We had great student help each day, in total the students worked 925 hours," Cody recalled. Collegiate Farm Bureau at UW-Madison intends on using some of the proceeds from the Cheese Stand to promote agriculture on campus through campus wide events such as Ag Day on Campus and a study tour in the spring. Badger Dairy Club plans on using the money to travel to different farms in Wisconsin and learn about the diversity of Wisconsin's dairy industry.

The clubs continue to thank the industry for its support in making the annual Cheese Stand a success and a special thank you goes out to the major sponsors including SCR, Lallemand Animal Nutrition, Mycogen, and Grassland. We look forward to seeing you at the 50th annual World Dairy Expo.
