Charm Sciences Flunixin and Beta-lactam Combo Test Receives NCIMS Approval

Charm Flunixin and Beta-lactam test is the first combination test kit approved for Pasteurized Milk Ordinance (PMO) for raw milk.

Charm Sciences, Inc ( is pleased to announce that the Charm Flunixin and Beta-lactam test has received approval from the National Conference on Interstate Milk Shipments (NCIMS) for the detection of beta-lactam and flunixin residues in raw, commingled, cow milk. The method was evaluated and approved to meet performances for robustness, sensitivity, selectivity, and lack of milk interferences. The method approval was communicated by the FDA- Center for Food Safety and Nutrition (CFSAN) in coded memorandum M-I-12-3 dated Feb 3, 2012.

“By combining the flunixin antibody with beta-lactam receptors in a lateral flow test, Charm is able to offer the dairy industry a single tool to screen for the beta-lactam antibiotics that are mandated under the PMO, combined with a drug, flunixin, they could voluntarily screen. This allows for farmers and processors to screen for an additional drug residues used on farms without incurring additional kit costs”, says Robert Salter, VP of Regulatory and Industrial Affairs. “It also allows dairy farmers and processors to verify that their residue control programs and drug use education programs are working effectively to protect the milk supply.”

The FDA communication permits the milk industry to meet mandatory beta-lactam antibiotic screening requirements under Appendix N of the Pasteurized Milk Ordinance (PMO), while simultaneously and voluntarily screening for flunixin, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug sometimes administered for animal health and welfare. Flunixin may be administered for treatment of Bovine respiratory diseases and when used properly by farmers and veterinarians, and according to instructions, does not create a milk residue.

Charm’s newly approved test kit detects 5 target beta-lactams (amoxicillin, ampicillin, ceftiofur, cephapirin, and penicillin G) as well as flunixin at or below the US Safe Level/Tolerance.
