Gardner brings added value to center with transition expertise

Charles GardnerThe Center for Dairy Excellence has named Charles E. Gardner, DVM, MBA as dairy transition coordinator as of January 2015. In his new role, Dr. Gardner will work with the center to coordinate and promote resources for Pennsylvania dairy farm families pursuing a plan for Transition or Succession in their business.

"Dr. Gardner has increasingly demonstrated his passion for the transition process and the need to incorporate open and effective communication skills," said John Frey, executive director for the Center for Dairy Excellence. "He is a great fit into the center's plan to empower families as they work through intergenerational transition."

Gardner brings a long history of expertise in dairy profitability and an equally strong desire to help dairy families transition profitable businesses to the next generation of management and ownership. He became certified from the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners as a specialist in dairy practice in 1993 and received his MBA from Moravian College in 1999. He joined Agway as director of the Agway TSPF Heifer Program in 1999. From 2004 – 2014, Gardner worked with Cargill Animal Nutrition to help producers improve animal and financial performance. Dr. Gardner now works as an independent consultant in the dairy industry and will spend one day a week working with the center.

"I look forward to helping farm families find the resources they need to successfully transfer assets and responsibilities from one generation to the next in a manner that satisfies the needs of all involved," Gardner said.

Gardner grew up in southern New Jersey, and worked on his uncle's dairy farm. He attended the College of Agriculture at the Cornell University from 1967 –1969, then transferred to Cornell's Veterinary College to graduate from Veterinary School in 1973. He then joined the Ackermanville Veterinary Hospital, doing mainly dairy cattle practice. He stayed there until 1989, when he started Dairy Management Consultants, a practice specializing in dairy herd management.
