The Southeast has lost one of its most innovative and influential dairy business leaders. Mr. Arlin Buttke, 72, founder of Buttke Dairy Enterprises, Randleman, NC, died on Oct. 29, 2015, with memorial services taking place on Nov. 1st in Lexington, NC.
Mr. Buttke will be remembered for his very practical approach to dairy farming. He was one of the first dairymen in the southeast to recognize and pursue the 'larger herd' method of reducing costs per unit as a means to being practical and profitable. He was known for his quest to build 'the most perfect dairy facility' possible, and would not hesitate to have herd reduction or dispersal sales in order to capitalize on his investments - and then he would rebuild another herd.
He had a wide presence in the registered Holstein industry, and often consigned animals to regional and national sales. His continual attendance at herd dispersals and registered genetic sales, at which he was a constant bidder, generated millions of dollars in the Southeast dairy economy, bettering the life of his fellow dairymen in the process. He was as well-versed at discussing current genetic trends as he was at facility and herd health management, and then combining all facets of the business into a profitable operation.
Arlin will be remembered not only for his adventurous approach to dairy farming, but also for his courteous and respectful treatment of all people he encountered. He was quick to recognize practical ideas used by dairymen around the world, and did not hesitate to implement them on any of his facilities. He mentored many young dairymen through his storied career. Any visitor to his office quickly realized the importance of his faith, as devotional books were always found on his desk.
Arlin Buttke continually moved the bar for bettering the dairy industry he loved, and inspired others to do the same. His presence and influence will be sorely missed. His presence and influence will be sorely missed.
