The American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) announces the development by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) of a new international standard covering safety for portable grain augers.
This proposed new standard will be ISO 4254-16, Agricultural machinery -- Safety -- Part 16: Portable agricultural grain conveying equipment and be part of the ISO 4254 series of standards. It is intended to be used in conjunction with ISO 4254 1, the general international safety standard for agricultural machinery. This standard will be based on ASABE standard S361.3:1990, Safety for portable auger conveying equipment and Canadian Standard M688-2010, Portable agricultural auger conveying equipment.

Committee membership is open and typically comprises individuals with an academic or commercial interest in the subject matter. Participation in standards development benefits commerce as well as the public by ensuring issues such as consumer safety and evolving technology are addressed in a thorough and timely manner and by reducing trade barriers that can occur in the absence of standardization.

Conformance to ASABE standards is voluntary, except where required by state, provincial, or other governmental requirements.
