Research shows that calves lie down 92 percent of the time, compared to 50 to 60 percent of the time for older heifers, according to the American Society of Agricultural Engineers. The table below gives an indication of where calves, when housed in hutches, spend their time. The majority of the time is spent in the hutch, so it is especially important to keep that area clean, dry, and bedded with plenty of straw or shavings.
